Programme Introduction

The MSc Engineering (Mechanical Manufacture) programme aims to develop in individuals an all-rounded set of skills and knowledge in the field of mechanical manufacture. With a curriculum that is specifically crafted to prepare them for the real world, students will have the opportunity to develop a rigorous understanding of mechanical manufacture, such as research methods, design and innovation, systems modelling and analysis, and manufacture and production.

The challenges of the curriculum aim to train students to be inventive and creative problem solvers with a wealth of technical and theoretical expertise that they can draw upon to excel in diverse areas of their field.

Outline for Engineering Research Methods and PG Studies
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Critically analyse major sources of knowledge and hierarchies relating to research.
- Develop further the students’ knowledge of research design, data collection and analysis.
- Prepare students to undertake research at postgraduate level.
- Provide students with a critical awareness of the components of project management and its application in a variety of contexts.
- Enable students to master writing skills for research proposal and dissertation.
Outline for Engineering Design and Innovation
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Develop a rigorous understanding of innovative engineering design methodology, modern design tactics and practice.
- Critically analyse the drivers for innovation past, present and future.
- Demonstrate initiative, innovation and creativity to solve a computer engineering problem in your dissertation project.
Outline for Engineering Systems Modelling and Simulation
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Build upon analytical skills and knowledge of the engineering design process and how it can be improved through the use of advanced engineering systems modelling and simulations.
- Be able to perform in-depth analysis of systems and data using currently available programme specific modelling, simulation and analysis software. Typical examples might be ABAQUS and ANSYS for mechanically related programmes and MATLAB, SIMULINK and VEE for electrically related programmes.
Outline for Advanced Control Engineering and Systems Analysis
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Develop mastery of dynamic system analysis, the theory of modelling, simulation and control of dynamic systems in the context of practical engineering applications and advanced control theories and approaches.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the capabilities of computer-based tools for control systems analysis, design and simulation currently used in industry and to explore the potential for more advanced software tools in the field of applications
- Conduct critical analysis in applying the theory and computational tools to a variety of industrially relevant problems through case studies, assignments and project work.
Outline for Structural Integrity & Optimisation
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Understand how material allowables are formulated in order to design structures.
- Develop further the students’ knowledge of failure mechanisms in static structures.
- Provide students with the critical awareness of temporal failures of materials, such as creep and environmental factors such as thermal loads.
- Critically understand fracture and crack propagation in metals.
- Develop their understanding of how material degrade over time and how this affects their structural strength.
Outline for Industry 4.0 Manufacture and Production
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Create a coherent lean production system.
- Build a culture to support excellence and relentless improvement.
- Apply appropriate methodologies for transforming your facility to lean manufacturing.
- Use TRIZ and Six Sigma in engineering manufacturing industries.
- Understand and Implement Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
- Introduce students to the principles of Industry 4.0 (fourth industrial revolution) and the current trend of automation, smart sensors and data exchange in manufacturing.
Outline for Dissertation (60 Credits)
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to
- Demonstrate their competence by planning, conducting research and completing and submitting a substantial dissertation independently under appropriate supervision and guidance.
- Develop the skills on critical evaluation of current research work in the areas of study.
- Conduct the development and intensive exploration of an area of personal interest and enthusiasm related to the programmes of study using the in-depth knowledge acquired in the other modules of the programme.
- Prepare students for employment and undertaking research in the areas of Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Manufacturing, Automotive, composite Materials, renewable Engineering and Sustainable Energy, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, and unmanned Aircraft System Technology.

Duration

12 months (Full-time/Part-Time) with schedule and sequence set according to Scheme of Work.
Maximum allowed period for a student to complete the course is 36 months, subject to the approval from Wrexham University

Maximum Candidature Period

Student is not allowed to retake the course and/or request for a refund in the event if he/she fails to complete the programme within the maximum candidature period.

Opportunities for Further Education/Career Pathway

Students may consider progressing to a Doctoral degree of relevant discipline in any Universities subject to their acceptance.

Entry Requirements

Academic Level:

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
For mature students, the candidate must be ≥ 30 years and have 8 years of working experience.

English Language:

Applicants must have an IELTS Score of 6.5 or pass the Certificate in Academic English Level 6 conducted by DIMENSIONS or passed the English Proficiency Test conducted by DIMENSIONS at equivalent level or its equivalent.

Sessions will be conducted from 7.00pm to 10.00pm

Note 1:	International Student must achieve at least 90% attendance rate (ICA Requirement).
Note 2:	International Student must not be absent for more than 7 consecutive days without valid reason (ICA Requirement).
Note 3:	Students who do not require ICA’s student’s pass must achieve at least 80% attendance rate.Our College only accept medical certificates as proof for absenteeism. Any other documents should only be accepted on a case-by-case basis with full justification and be acceptable by ICA.
Note 4:	In the first week of studies, an induction session will be conducted. The students will be briefed by the Academic Staff on full details of the course including scheme of work, timetable, assessments and grading, assessment and exam dates and venue and many other academic matters.
Note 5:	DIMENSIONS has the right to cancel a class/an intake if the minimum number of students enrolled is less than 10 for any programme per class. Students may enroll into a later intake, if any, or withdraw from course. (For refund, please refer to our Refund Policy).
Note 6:	Students (both international and local) must achieve an attendance rate of 80% and above in order to qualify for examinations.
