The Diploma in Biomedical Science programme is designed for learners who wish to obtain a thorough understanding of professional ethics and the relevance of biology to contemporary and ethical questions. Upon successful completion, qualified students will be awarded the Diploma in Biomedical Science by DIMENSIONS International College. Thereafter, they can choose to take up the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biomedical Science programme offered by one of DIMENSIONS’ partner universities – Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Objective

Diploma in Biomedical Science consists of 6 modules.

Course Outline

• Outline for Cell Biology: An IntroductionOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cell structure, organisation of the organelles they contain, their physiological properties, metabolic processes, signalling pathways, life cycles
     and interactions with the environment;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the study at microscopic and molecular levels as it encompasses prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells;
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the components of cells and how cells work, which is fundamental to all biological sciences and essential for research in biomedical fields such as cancer and other diseases.

• Outline for Anatomy and Physiology: An IntroductionOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structure of the human body and the mechanical, physical and biochemical processes that support the body’s functions;
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the ways in which the body systems carry out distinct, co-ordinated and important functions;
  3. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the basic anatomy, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the nervous and sensory systems and the endocrine system.

• Outline for Biochemistry: An IntroductionOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the chemical processes within and related to living organisms;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main focus of biochemistry which is understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells. This in turn relates to the study and understanding of tissues, organs and the whole organisms;
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the structure, functions and interactions of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids, which provide the structure of cells and perform many of the functions associated with life.

• Outline for Microbiology: An IntroductionOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the study of microscopic organisms like bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and viruses, which are too small to be seen by the naked eye;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the applications of microbiology, which is often introduced with medical principles of immunology.

• Outline for Biomedical Science Specialisms: An IntroductionOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the use of biomedical sciences disciplines such as medical microbiology, clinical virology, clinical epidemiology, genetic epidemiology and biomedical engineering;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of life science specialities, physiological science specialisms and physics and bioengineering specialisms.

• Outline for Personal and Professional DevelopmentOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the activities that improve awareness and identity, development of talent and potential, building of human capital and facilitation of employability;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of learning to earn professional credentials such as academic degrees to formal coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities situated in practice.

Duration

6 months Institutional Training
Maximum allowed period for a student to complete the course is 12 months

Maximum Candidature Period

Student is not allowed to retake the course and/or request for a refund in the event if he/she fails to complete the programme within the maximum candidature period.

Opportunities for Further Education/Career Pathway

Students may consider pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science or other options within this field of study.

Entry Requirements

Academic Level: GCE O-Level with passes in 2 subjects (Science and Elementary Mathematics) or equivalent qualifications.

 

English Proficiency : At least IELTS score of 5.5 or DIMENSIONS Certificate in Academic English (CAE) Level 4 or pass the English Proficiency Test at equivalent level conducted by DIMENSIONS or pass with at least a C Grade for English Language at the GCE O-Level. English proficiency may be considered to have been met and an IELTS score may not be required if applicant possesses a highest qualification where English was the sole medium of instruction.
