Programme Introduction

The BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Top-Up Degree) programme aims to develop individuals into engineering professionals who possess the intellectual and technical skills they need to excel in local and international industries amidst a rapidly changing technological and business environment.

 

The rigorous curriculum equips students with personnel management, knowledge acquisition, problem analysis, and solution making skills, preparing them for a career that reaches into management levels.   • Outline for Professional Engineering (20 Credits)

    • Critically analyse given situations relating to engineering, and prepare, propose, and justify appropriate courses of action.
    • Report clearly, critically, and comprehensively on problems, solutions, and outcomes.
    • Critically analyse given situations relating to engineering, and prepare, propose, and justify appropriate courses of action.
    • Display an in-depth knowledge of professional roles and relationships including teamwork.
    • Critically discuss legislative requirements and professional codes of practice in relation to the provision of services, health and safety, and employment of staff.

  • Outline for Electronics, Design and Testing (20 Credits)

    • Build upon analytical skills and knowledge gained in previous modules to further develop students’ problem-solving abilities relating to the design, analysis and evaluation of electrical and electronic systems in a variety of applications.
    • Develop original test strategies and to consider the interrelationships of test and design within the design and manufacturing cycle for modern electronic products.

  • Outline for Digital Signal Processing (20 Credits)

    • Explain the theoretical principles, limitations and methodologies associated with DSP-based system designs.
    • Analyse the discrete time signals and systems in the frequency domain using Discrete Fourier Transform and Fast Fourier Transform.
    • Design and Analyse FIR and IIR filters using a variety of techniques.

  • Outline for Wireless Communication and Antennas (20 Credits)

    • Analise different parameters and phenomena of radio wave propagation in electromagnetic domain.
    • Investigate and calculate various design and radiation parameters of antennas.
    • Discuss the applications of different types of antennas and wireless communication technologies according to the practical requirements.

  • Outline for Project (40 Credits)

    • Integrate appropriate theoretical and practical methods including risk management to the critical analysis and evaluation of an engineering problems
    • Integrate research and project management methodologies and planning in investigating the subject matter relevant to the project.
    • Implement the appropriate stages of a project which may include: specification, task analysis, search of current information sources, consider options and plan and cost solutions, select and design a solution, construct/implement solution, test and evaluate the solution and present this information in an engineering report.
    • Communicate the results in the form of an oral presentation, with due consideration given to commercial implications.

Duration

  • 12 months (Full-time/Part-Time) with schedule and sequence set according to Scheme of Work.
  • Maximum allowed period for a student to complete the course is 36 months, subject to the approval from Wrexham University

Maximum Candidature Period

Student is not allowed to retake the course and/or request for a refund in the event if he/she fails to complete the programme within the maximum candidature period.

Opportunities for Further Education/Career Pathway

Students may consider progressing to a Master’s Degree of relevant discipline in any Universities subject to their acceptance.

Entry Requirements

Academic Level:

Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or 3-year Polytechnic Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Higher Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or its equivalent.
For mature students, the candidate must be ≥ 30 years and have 8 years of working experience.

 

English Language:

Applicants must have an IELTS Score of 6.5 or pass the Certificate in Academic English Level 6 conducted by DIMENSIONS or passed the English Proficiency Test conducted by DIMENSIONS at equivalent level or its equivalent.

Class Periods

Full-time(Face-to-face)

Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 11.30am and/or 12.15pm - 3.15pm and/or 3.30pm - 6.30pm

3 hours per session. All specific programme schedules will be reflected in the timetable.

Part-time(Blended)

Weekday (Monday to Friday)
Sessions will be conducted from 7.00pm to 10.00pm

and/or

Weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday)
Sessions will be conducted within 9.00am to 6.00pm

    Note 4: In the first week of studies, an induction session will be conducted. The students will be briefed by the Academic Staff on full details of the course including scheme of work, timetable, assessments and grading, assessment and exam dates and venue and many other academic matters.
    Note 5: DIMENSIONS has the right to cancel a class/an intake if the minimum number of students enrolled is less than 10 for any programme per class. Students may enroll into a later intake, if any, or withdraw from course. (For refund, please refer to our Refund Policy).
    Note 6: Students (both international and local) must achieve an attendance rate of 80% and above in order to qualify for examinations.
