Be it misrepresentation in media, or older generations passing down stigmas to their children, psychology has been and will continue to be heavily misunderstood. Let us break that cycle by debunking some of the main misconceptions about psychology.

Psychologists can read minds

Psychology is the study of the state of mind and behaviour. It tries to understand people’s cognitions, emotions, actions, and how people interact in society. Psychologists might try to understand your situations and issues and predict how you might react to them, but it does not signify they can read minds.

Psychologists only work in hospitals

Psychology is not just therapy and counselling. It is a broad and diverse field that encompasses the study of human thought, behaviour and more. Therefore, psychologists are needed in various settings. For example, treating mental illnesses alongside doctors in healthcare, taking care of employees’ mental well-being in the corporate world, and assisting athletes in enhancing their performance in sports.

Psychology isn’t a science

Psychologists rely on systematic and objective methods of observation and experimentation. Their research is backed up by empirical evidence. They use a range of research methods, from case studies to large-scale surveys to arrive at their findings.
