The World Health Organization has classified “burnout” as an occupational hazard.

If burnout is not addressed, it can affect a person’s mental well-being and lead to issues that would affect their work performance and productivity. It leaves one feeling hopeless, cynical, and resentful.

So how do you recognize the signs of burnout? Here are 5 indicators.

Feeling tired even after getting enough sleep

Even after getting sufficient sleep, you still feel lethargic, drained, and are emotionally unable to deal with problems around you. This is a mental sign that you are facing burnout and might need to step away from the root cause of your stress.

Lack of motivation or no sense of purpose

You lose your sense of identity, and your life feels meaningless. You have many responsibilities to tend to, but you cannot find the motivation to start or complete your tasks. You feel unfulfilled in the work that you are doing but you do not have the energy to change your situation or find a distraction.

Snapping at loved ones

Feeling burnt out can leave you highly stressed, which causes you to be set off by the tiniest thing. You feel impatient, intolerant, and angry. It’s important to recognise this and give yourself some space to cool off.

Feeling depressed

Burnout can look like depression. The difference between the two is that burnout can be eased with rest or time off. However, if untreated, burnout can lead to depression.

Alienation from activities

Burnout can show up in you distancing yourself emotionally from colleagues and work. You will feel cynical and frustrated towards them, which can slowly build into resentment.

If you feel like these signs resonate with you, it is time to step back and separate yourself from the source of your burnout. Take a break, take care of yourself, and seek professional counselling if needed.
