Programme Introduction

Be it having a knack for numbers and figures or having an interest in a career in accounting and finance, the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Accounting and Finance offered by Cardiff Metropolitan University is a well-designed programme which aims to develop the learners’ understanding and skills in financial and management accounting.

 

Through studying a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Accounting and Finance programme, learners will be able to demonstrate, apply and explain basic accounting methods, accounting conventions and concepts as well as prepare product and job costs using absorption and process costing techniques.

Year 1

• Outline for Financial AccountingOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate, apply and explain basic accounting methods, accounting conventions and concepts (Assessed during exam);
  2. Demonstrate and explain the uses of key accounting systems and the recording of accounting events (Assessed via coursework and exam);
  3. Explain the various types of institution and prepare basic accounting statements for each (Assessed during coursework and exam).

• Outline for Management AccountingOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Use a range of techniques to account for the costs of direct materials &, labour;
  2. To prepare product & job costs using absorption and process costing techniques;
  3. Use marginal costing & breakeven analysis to evaluate and solve of a range of realistic problems;
  4. Prepare & interpret a range of budgets and variances as part of budgetary control.

• Outline for Business in a Global ContextOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Identify a range of issues and debates through which to illustrate the impact of the business environment on business activity;
  2. Evaluate the conceptual categorisation of the business environment, and use models based on this categorisation in analysis;
  3. Describe how different business functions respond to changes in the business environment;
  4. Use, interpreter and understand a range of statistical and non-statistical tools and techniques to analyse business data and information;
  5. Reflect upon learning and make connections between issues, business activity and appropriate data.

  2. Produce specifically designed accounting reports for period end financial and management accounts including reconciled bank statements and statutory reports e.g. VAT returns.

  1. Apply basic mathematical methods;
  2. Understand the relationship between equations and linear and non‐linear diagrams;
  3. Measure probability;
  4. Perform hypothesis tests.

• Outline for Financial Services: Regulation and EthicsOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Compare the different types of UK financial services providers and products;
  2. Analyse the effects of changes and trends in the market place on both providers and consumers.

• Outline for Business ApplicationsOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Create and use spreadsheets to perform data analysis, and produce graphical representations;
  2. Create and use presentation software and electronically distribute documents;
  3. Integrate information from various office application sources and understand the use and development of databases in the office environment.

Year 2

• Outline for Performance ManagementOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Prepare the “Master Budget” with the use of spreadsheet software and be able to apply traditional and ABC costing;
  2. Discuss critically the behavioural implications of budgeting planning and control together with the different approaches to budgeting e.g. ZBB, Activity Based Budgeting;
  3. Identify relevant costs & appropriate techniques for decision making & use them to facilitate the solution of a range of realistic management problems.

• Outline for Money, Banking and RiskOn successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and explain the importance of the monetary and financial system and analyse the roles and functions of financial institutions, participants and regulators within markets and evaluate how financial markets operate;
  2. Demonstrate an understanding the different types of risks and causes of risk management within organisation (including financial institutions);
  3. Understand the theoretical underpinnings of risk – its causes, and methods of managing the primary business risks arising from financial markets;

Maximum Candidature Period

Student is not allowed to retake the course and/or request for a refund in the event if he/she fails to complete the programme within the maximum candidature period.

Completed GCE A-Level with passes in at least three subjects at D Grade and above (including Mathematics and Science) or DIMENSIONS’ Foundation Diploma in Business or a 3-Year Senior High School Diploma or an equivalent Diploma in related disciplines

 

English Proficiency: An IELTS score of at least 6.0 or DIMENSIONS’ Certificate in Academic English (CAE) Level 5 or passed DIMENSIONS’ English Proficiency Test at an equivalent level or its equivalent. English proficiency may be considered to have been met and an IELTS score may not be required if applicant possesses a highest qualification where English was the sole medium of instruction.
