MSc in Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing (OHSW) (Teach-Out) , student of 2017

Singaporean | General Manager

Why did you choose CMU and your course?

Simply put, the MSc in OHSW offered by Cardiff Metropolitan University (CMU) is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the world’s largest professional health and safety membership organisation, while other MSc OHS-related programmes offered by local universities such as NUS and NTU are not accredited by IOSH. Therefore, I decided to choose CMU over both local universities.

Which aspects of the course do you think have been most beneficial to your career development?

In my opinion, the Worker Engagement and Wellbeing module has offered me a great deal of industry-relevant insights and perspectives which are exceedingly different from the common practices of the typical industrial safety scene in Singapore. From what I have perceived, many companies emphasise on the health and safety aspects of their work environments and end up neglecting the wellbeing of their employees.

With an increased awareness and implementation of occupational health and safety improvement programmes these days, the number of workplace accidents has reduced drastically over the recent years. Moving forward, we will witness more companies prioritising and shifting the focus to the holistic wellbeing of their employees and as such, this module thoroughly prepares health and safety practitioners for their professional duties in the near future.

Please describe your current role

I work for a plumbing company and I believe that I am one of the brightest and youngest general managers in the plumbing industry aiming to revolutionise and digitalise the current plumbing industry. With vast knowledge of many different subject areas, I am a firm believer in lifelong learning and I currently hold thirty four certificates and multiple licences issued by the authorities.

I am in charge of managing all company projects from the planning to execution stage, reviewing clients’ briefs and liaising directly with the Client Servicing Department. By obtaining an MSc in OHSW, I am able to steer the projects in the right direction and adopt an optimal strategy for the allocation of safety budget for each project.
