Course Structure

Advanced Diploma in Psychology consists of 8 modules.

Course Outline

• Outline for Psychology of Learning
  This module will provide students with an understanding of the psychological complexities underpinning teaching and learning. The module will focus on teaching and learning on multiple levels: the role of teacher and learner, the intricate mechanisms of the teaching and learning process. This module will also provide a link between psychological theory and educational practice.
  
• Outline for Personality and Individual Differences
  This module will investigate individual differences in humans along intellectual and personality dimensions. Different theories of personality and intelligence will be explored and the limitations of the measurement of these dimensions will be studied. Students will also learn about the complexity of individual differences, personality disorders and problems assessing and classifying such disorders.
  
• Outline for Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy
  This module introduces students to the field of counselling and psychotherapy. The topics covered will survey the major concepts and practices of the contemporary therapeutic systems and will address some ethical and professional concerns in the counselling practice.
  
• Outline for Abnormal Psychology
  This module will provide students with the concept of abnormal behaviour by considering the historical context, classification systems currently in operation, and models of mental disorder. The main classes of mental disorder, as conceptualised by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) IVTR, will be presented in order to provide a broad overview of the diversity of abnormal behaviour in children, adults and older adults. A biopsychosocial approach will be taken in consideration of the causes, consequences and treatment of abnormal psychological states. The module highlights the importance of psychological, social and biological research in contributing to our understanding of mental disorder, and the development of prevention, management and treatment strategies.
  
• Outline for Neuroscience and Behaviour
  The Neuroscience and Behaviour module is designed to introduce students to how biopsychological principles apply to the real world, with an emphasis on the personal and social relevance of biopsychological principles. The module outline will focus on the foundations of biopsychology, sensory and motor systems, brain plasticity, biopsychology of motivation, and disorders of cognition and emotion. The topics outlined in the course content will be introduced at a broad conceptual level and will be illustrated with examples that introduce some of the key practical implications.
  
• Outline for Disorders of Infancy, Childhood & Adolescence
  This module provides students with an understanding of psychological issues relating to disorders of infants, children and adolescents, gives understanding of ethical issues, basics of work with the family of a child with psychopathology.
  
• Outline for Research and Statistics
  This module provides students with the different research techniques and statistical tools used to work with data analysis and issues that affect the decision-making process in research. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to critically evaluate studies in psychological literature.
  
• Outline for Social Psychology 2
  The aim of this module is to provide students with an in-depth approach to the theories of social psychology. Social Psychology 2 will help students to apply basic theories of social psychology to real life situations.

8 months Institutional Training
Maximum allowed period for a student to complete the course is 16 months

Maximum Candidature Period

Student is not allowed to retake the course and/or request for a refund in the event if he/she fails to complete the programme within the maximum candidature period.

Opportunities for Further Education/Career Pathway

Students may consider pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology or other options within this field of study.

Entry Requirements

Academic Level:

Local students	Polytechnic Diploma or DIMENSIONS Psychology Diploma or other private Diploma (with equivalent entry requirements as Level 4 Diploma and subject to approval).
International students	Equivalent qualifications related to psychology from other countries (with equivalent entry requirements as Level 4 Diploma and subject to approval).

Note: Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis
English Proficiency : At least IELTS 5.5 or CAE Level 4 or pass the English Proficiency Test at equivalent level conducted by DIMENSIONS. English proficiency may be considered to have been met and an IELTS score may not be required if applicant possesses a highest qualification where English was the sole medium of instruction.

Class Periods

Full-time(Face-to-face)

Monday to Friday: 8.30am - 11.30am and/or 12.15pm - 3.15pm and/or 3.30pm - 6.30pm

3 hours per session. All specific programme schedules will be reflected in the timetable.

Part-time(Blended)

Weekday (Monday to Friday)
Sessions will be conducted from 7.00pm to 10.00pm

and/or

Weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday)
Sessions will be conducted within 9.00am to 6.00pm

3 hours per session. All specific programme schedules will be reflected in the timetable.

Note:

• A student who fails with average mark less than 30 is required to retake the module.
• A student who fails more than half of the total number of modules is required to retake the whole course.
